American Dad! 's fourth season began on September 23, 2007, with a total of sixteen episodes to air. However, two were held over from previous seasons, marking them as the last episodes to be produced in traditional animation. After the 100th episode (of the series), "Pulling Double Booty", production was halted because of a writers' strike. This would last until early 2008, so only eight episodes were produced and aired before 2007 ended. The seventh episode produced during Season 4, "Big Trouble in Little Langley", served as the crossover episode between Family Guy and American Dad!—the former being shown directly after former and the latter shown before it.
Due to switching from traditional animation to Flash animation, the opening sequence of American Dad! was drastically changed. This season is the first season to use the new opening sequence starting with this season.

Co-creator Matt Weitzman is a former writer and executive producer for Family Guy, with Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane acting as one of American Dad!'s executive producers and as creator for two episodes as well as providing two of the characters' voices.
